Ofsted asked to carry out review of schools’ career guidance

Ofsted has been asked to carry out a thematic review of careers guidance for young people in schools and further education and skills providers. As part of the review the inspectorate will look at careers guidance both in mainstream provision and in specialist settings, such as special schools and alternative provision.

As well as assessing the quality of careers guidance, the review will also identify strengths and weaknesses in careers provision in schools and further education and skills providers, and make recommendations to improve practice?. They will examine how well leaders fulfil their statutory duties in relation to careers guidance, and ensure careers education is of high quality. They will also look at whether providers are engaging with stakeholders such as employers, and explore how the curriculum helps learners make informed choices about their future education, employment and training.

In order to explore these areas Ofsted will carry out research visits to a sample of schools and other settings in the spring and summer of 2023. During the visits they will talk to leaders and teachers, as well as to learners, about their experiences and perceptions of careers guidance. Alongside the visits they will also review existing inspection evidence and hold focus groups with employers, education and training providers and inspectors.

Ofsted carried out a similar review a decade ago, which found that only around a fifth of schools were effective in ensuring that all its students in Years 9, 10 and 11 were receiving the level of information, advice and guidance they needed to support decision-making.

The latest review will be published in autumn 2023 and the full terms of reference can be viewed here: https://tinyurl.com/yc8fuk4v
