Residential Caretaker

Start date: July 2024. Full time.
School house: three-bedroom bungalow is available with this post
subject to a 12.5% accommodation charge of gross FTE annual salary.
37 hours a week over a split shift, 25 days holiday + bank holidays per year.
Salary Grade D Point 5–9, £12.18–£13.01 per hour; between £23,500 - £25,119 pa
depending on experience, Additional hours may be required for school events
outside contracted hours, for which overtime will be paid.

The Governors of the Burghfield Federation are seeking to appoint a resourceful, reliable residential caretaker with initiative and a broad range of skills necessary for the effective and efficient operation of site services. When making appointments of this nature we look for people who themselves have sound educational backgrounds and are physically fit due to the nature of the role. 

The main focus of the role is security and maintenance of the buildings, health & safety, fire safety, and statutory compliance across both schools in the federation. Other duties include undertaking safety audits and ensuring regular health and safety checks are completed e.g. fire alarms, emergency lighting, and play equipment inspections. The hours will be split equally between each school. The daily working schedule will be split to include the locking up and housekeeping of both school sites. 

Key aspects of the role include: 

  • Ensuring the premises and its grounds are properly maintained, secured, and ready for use 
  • Effective site management, including porterage, gardening, and maintenance 
  • Operation of site services, including central heating, security, and equipment maintenance 
  • Responding to alarms or other emergencies outside normal working hours as necessary 
  • Daily reaction to urgent requests 
  • Supporting and contributing to the overall ethos, work, and aims of the school

Some additional hours may be required for school events outside of contracted hours for which overtime will be paid. 

The salary for the post is Grade D Point 5-9, £12.18 - £13.01 per hour, between £23,500 - £25,119 per annum depending on experience 

The successful candidate must: 

  • Be able to work on his/her own initiative 
  • Have excellent organisation skills and be extremely flexible, trustworthy, and reliable with a positive approach to work and a sense of pride in the environment. 
  • Experience in joinery, plumbing, repairs, and maintenance would be an advantage, but not essential.
