Maintenance/Health and Safety Officer

Required January 2020.
Grade F/WBC Spinal Points 11–19, £21,166 pa, 37 hours per week throughout the year.

We are seeking to appoint an enthusiastic and efficient Maintenance/Health & Safety Officer to work in support of the school, specifically within the Premises Team to maintain and improve the school environment. In order to effectively fulfil their duties, the job holder will be required to work flexibly and collaboratively with various staff across the whole of the school community. 

The person we are seeking will: 

  • support the School Business Manager in formulating the school’s Health and Safety policy, reviewing it annually;
  • take a leading role in inspecting and testing across the site, including work which ensures compliance with legislative frameworks (for example, electrical or water testing)
  • support staff by coordinating Health and Safety training as necessary across the school, working closely with the school’s CPD coordinator and members of the Professional Development team;
  • ensure that all key premises-related risk assessments are carried out and acted upon;
  • report to Governors on premises-related health and safety issues; 
  • monitor health and safety around the school site, taking appropriate action over any concerns;
  • advise on Health and Safety matters, including measures in the event of emergencies;
  • work collaboratively with other members of the Premises Team to support maintenance and refurbishment duties, thus improving the quality of the school environment
  • undertake general caretaking duties;
  • carry out reactive maintenance around the school site;
  • carry out proactive refurbishment work (within the level of competence of the jobholder) to enhance and improve the school’s facilities.

Little Heath School is a highly successful comprehensive school (1610 on roll, including 320 in the Sixth Form) situated in a pleasant semi-rural setting to the west of Reading, with good access to road and rail links.
